Gagosian Gallery commissioned Bruce Mau Design to develop a format for the gallery’s extensive multi-volume catalogue raisonné of Edward Ruscha’s paintings. As the lead designer for the inaugural volume of this series, I worked closely with the editor, artist, gallery director, and printer to fine-tune a direct typographic approach and an unobtrusive page design to foreground individual paintings. I proposed full-scale details and selected pages from the artist’s notebooks to complement the primary reproductions; coordinated fold-outs for significant large-format works; directed typesetting of extensive back matter; and designed the quiet cover typography and the contrastingly bold spine.
